Committee Action Taken to Win the Competition with China:
- Released a bold new framework for an American First AI Policy at the Special Competitive Studies Project AI+ Expo Fireside Chat—building on the bipartisan Chip Security Act to protect U.S. AI leadership from CCP influence.
- Pressured Eastern Michigan University to cut ties with two Chinese universities linked to the PRC military and national security apparatus. EMU became the seventh U.S. institution to officially end such partnerships following Select Committee oversight. This followed warnings in the Committee’s September 2024 report about DoD-funded research fueling Chinese military advances in quantum, AI, drones, and more.
- Chairman Moolenaar worked to strengthen AI accountability by co-sponsoring the AI Whistleblower Protection Act—bipartisan legislation to protect individuals raising the alarm about dangerous or unethical AI deployment.
- Backed efforts to secure the U.S. drone supply chain with Chairman Moolenaar co-sponsoring the Drones for First Responders (DFR) Act, led by Rep. Elise Stefanik, to reduce reliance on foreign adversaries and bolster national security.
- Launched an inquiry into U.S. tungsten supply chain vulnerabilities—highlighting the strategic importance of domestic production and pressing the Biden administration to support efforts like Almonty's mining project that could reduce dependence on China.
- Called on Washington, D.C., to end its sister-city relationship with Beijing to reject CCP propaganda and honor pro-democracy advocates.
- Challenged the Eclipse Foundation over its support for Huawei's HarmonyOS and OpenHarmony, raising national security concerns about CCP influence in open-source software and urging safeguards against potential exploitation by the Chinese government.
Other Action Taken to Win the Competition with China:
- Congressman Brett Guthrie's (KY-02), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, SUPPORT Act passed the House. This will help disrupt demand by expanding treatment and prevention resources, complementing the Select Committee’s report from April 2024 to cut off supply at the source.
- Following the Select Committee's recent letter, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the U.S. Center for AI Standards and Innovation. This move will ensure Commerce uses its vast scientific and industrial expertise to evaluate and understand the capabilities of these rapidly developing systems and identify vulnerabilities and threats within systems developed in the U.S. and abroad.
Select Committee and China News:
- Chairman Moolenaar and Members of the Select Committee held a a press conference marking the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
- In October 2024, when the CCP’s Ambassador came to Harvard and claimed China practices “people’s democracy”... the school stayed silent.
- The CCP has worked for years to infiltrate our higher education system and gain access to critical information. They have one goal in mind: to undermine American interests both at home and abroad.
- The CCP will stop at nothing—including smuggling dangerous pathogens—to exploit our research institutions and undermine our security.
- Harvard trained members of a sanctioned Chinese paramilitary group responsible for genocide.
- Congresswomen Young Kim on the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
- Congressman Zach Nunn on the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
- Congressman Ben Cline on the smuggling of a dangerous biological pathogen into the U.S.
- Senator Tom Cotton on keeping advanced AI chips out of the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.
- Congressman Darin Lahood on the CCP exploiting American technology to beat the U.S. militarily, diplomatically, and economically.
Chinese Threats this Week:
- In response to Secretary Hegseth’s warning about the growing threat posed by Beijing, the Chinese Communist Party issued its usual tirade, accusing the U.S. of “interference” and “hegemony.” But the truth is simple: the United States is standing with our allies and defending peace in the Indo-Pacific. China’s outrage is a sign our deterrence is working. When America calls out aggression and defends freedom, authoritarian regimes tremble.
- Federal authorities in the U.S. are investigating an alleged bioterrorism plot involving two Chinese researchers accused of attempting to smuggle a harmful crop-destroying fungus, Fusarium graminearum, into the United States. This fungus is known to cause significant agricultural and economic damage, and the incident has raised national security concerns.
