Over the weekend, Chairman Gallagher published an op-ed in the Daily Mail on the CCP's egregious environmental record.
'Divorce is not an option,' tweeted Gavin Newsom's official account as the California governor swanned around China preaching the gospel of climate change.
There have been a lot of D-words thrown around to describe evolving US-China relations – decoupling, de-risking, diversifying, disentangling – but Newsom's marital metaphor was a new one...
To believe that the Communist Party of China (CCP) could be a trusted partner on environmental issues, is, as Oscar Wilde said about second marriages, the triumph of hope over experience.
Let's look at the CCP's environmental record: According to the World Bank, the People's Republic of China (PRC) is responsible for 33% of all global greenhouse emissions, more than every developed country combined.
And while the United States and Europe are reducing carbon emissions, in China emissions continue to skyrocket, increasing 10% between 2022 to 2023 alone.
Last year, the CCP opened an average of two new coal plants every week, which is six times more than the rest of the world combined, and in the last year alone, China approved more coal plant capacity than exists on the continent of Europe.
No wonder air pollution in China causes a staggering two million deaths a year, according to the WHO...

Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party joined CNBC's Squawk Box on Friday morning to discuss the Chinese Communist Party's efforts to dominate globally in Artificial Intelligence and advanced technology.
“A world in which the Chinese Communist Party dominates these critical technologies— particularly artificial intelligence— is a very dark and dystopian world. It’s one we don’t want to live in.” - Chairman Gallagher told viewers.
Rep. Khanna added, “The United States has a huge advantage when it comes to AI. China tells the AI models, ‘Don’t talk about the Tiananmen Square massacre.' You’re not going to get AI to work effectively when you have the CCP regulating the inputs."

On Monday, Chairman Gallagher delivered remarks to dozens of university presidents at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Universities, urging the leaders to be clear-eyed about the threat posed by the CCP to their universities.
Chairman Gallagher warned the leaders, "For decades, the Chinese Communist Party has exploited the very openness at the heart of American society, and our higher education system in particular, twisting this strength to the Party’s own advantage...The Party’s goal is not mutual benefit. The CCP’s goal is to leverage technological advances, spread its coercive influence, and enmesh dependencies to strengthen its international position while eroding ours...The question — as I see it — is how do we respond in a way that preserves our free and open society—including our higher education system with all its natural strengths—while maintaining our moral, intellectual, and financial integrity?"

As Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Chairman Gallagher welcomed human rights activists and survivors of the CCP's brutal human rights abuses.
Gallagher recorded a video with the group, telling viewers, "I'm here with activists from the Hong Konger community, the Uyghur community, the Tibetan community... we request the Biden Administration prioritize human rights in all of its interactions with the Chinese Communist Party.
We can't ignore the ongoing atrocities in Xinjiang, the ongoing suppression of freedom in Hong Kong, cultural genocide in Tibet just because cabinet level officials want to take a trip to Beijing."

On Thursday, Chairman Gallagher and Rep. Young Kim (R-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Indo Pacific, sent a letter to Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, calling on the Navy to speed up the production and sale of weapons Taiwan needs to defend itself in the instance of a Chinese Communist Party invasion, like Harpoon and SLAM-ER missiles.
In the letter, the lawmakers write, “By our own leaders’ words and warnings, time is running out to deter the Chinese Communist Party from invading Taiwan – a vital partner of the United States. At this hour of danger, however, when the United States should be arming Taiwan to the maximum to strengthen its defenses and deter Chinese aggression, bureaucratic delays within the Navy are impeding the timely production and delivery of key weapons to Taiwan – including critical anti-ship missiles – and undermining efforts to prevent war.”

On Tuesday, Chairman Gallagher issued the below statement on the Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels ramming Philippine Coast Guard and resupply ships carrying supplies to troops stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre in the Second Thomas Shoal.
“On two separate occasions over the weekend, vessels of the Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia forces rammed Philippine ships operating legally in the South China Sea. The Chinese Communist Party’s dangerous, and illegal, attacks against our ally are completely unacceptable It is time to take additional measures to support our commitments under the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, including by assisting the Philippines in establishing a more secure and permanent foothold on the Second Thomas Shoal.”
