The Select: A Weekly Committee Recap (Week of 10/9)

October 16, 2023

Welcome to The Select, a weekly newsletter on the work of the Congressional Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.

See below for last week's updates.

WATCH: Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) nominates 'Bridge Man' for Nobel Prize on 1-year anniversary of Beijing's Sitong Bridge protest

Gallagher commemorates Peng Life whose Oct. 13, 2022 banner sparked protests in China - "We don’t want Covid Tests, we want food. We don’t want Cultural Revolution, we want reform. We don’t want lockdowns, we want freedom. We don’t want an autocrat, we want votes. We don’t want lies, we want dignity. We are citizens, not slaves.”

In the nomination, Chairman Gallagher highlights Apple's role in shutting down protests. Thousands of protestors used Apple's AirDrop function to organize against the authoritarian regime... until a sudden update.

"No one knows who made the call, but Apple’s AirDrop update has helped choke off the protests. It’s time for Apple to come clean. At a moment when the world cried out for bravery, why bend the knee?

Apple owes the truth to Bridge Man, as democracy activists call him in a nod to Tiananmen Square’s “Tank Man.” He has a name. Peng Lifa. He has a family. He’s disappeared." - Chairman Gallagher.

WATCH: Chairman Gallagher hosts 'Where Big Tech Meets the CCP's Surveillance State' podcast with software pioneers

Prior to Chairman Gallagher's nomination of Peng Lifa for the Nobel Prize, he sat down with a software pioneer Nathan Freitas and cybersecurity expert Valentin Weber to discuss the Chinese Communist Party's techno-totalitarian surveillance state, China's 'Great Firewall', and U.S. companies' footprint and complicity with the authoritarian regime.

When asked about Apple's likelihood of answering to the CCP to shut down AirDrop's functionality, Nathan Freitas answered, "The primary issue with Apple in China is we don't know exactly what they're doing and when they're doing it. Not only are they complying, and we feel overly complying, with the local laws of China, they're doing so without notification and with minimal reporting.... The primary area where they have complied is the App Store, censorship and removal of apps: over 50,000 apps.

Why did AirDrop get disabled at this crucial time? Was it Apple that complied? Looking at this long history of Apple complying with the regulations of the Chinese Communist Party, I have to say yes. Based on that, they must have complied."

Gallagher, Bipartisan Lawmakers Urge NOAA to Crackdown on Illegal Chinese Fishing

WATCH: "Gullible western politicians are constantly telling us that the Chinese Communist Party can be a responsible partner when it comes to the environment... the CCP is not a green partner. It is the number one flashing red threat to the environment." - Chairman Gallagher

Chairman Gallagher and a group bipartisan lawmakers wrote to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator Richard Spinrad, urging him to take immediate action against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) Chinese fishing fleets that operate globally.

China is the world's largest processor and exporter of seafood products to the United States. Operating with an estimated 17,000-vessel fleet, Chinese ships accounted for more than a third of all global deepwater fishing, where they bear responsibility for depleting a majority of fisheries off the coasts of South America and Africa.

NOAA's 2023 report on international fisheries revealed that Chinese IUU fishing imperiled the global ocean ecosystem and also identified widespread use of forced labor on deep water fishing fleets around the world.

In the letter, the lawmakers wrote, "Urgent action is needed. Past approaches to combatting IUU fishing by the PRC and efforts to stop forced labor have been insufficient, putting our fisherman and seafood producers at a competitive disadvantage, damaging marine ecosystems, and implicating U.S. consumers in forced labor."

'There's an axis of authoritarian powers against us' - Chairman Gallagher on Fox News

Commenting on the increasing chaos around the world, Chairman Gallagher told viewers last week, "Increasingly we have an axis of authoritarian powers that are arrayed against us. China is the dominant player in this partnership. The goal is really simple: it's to destroy American leadership and sever our alliances."

Gallagher, Krishnamoorthi Statement on Forced Repatriation of Chinese Human Rights Lawyer Lu Siwei

Chairman Gallagher and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) released the following joint statement on the forced repatriation of People’s Republic of China national and human rights lawyer Lu Siwei to China from Laos.

“We strongly condemn Mr. Siwei’s forced repatriation and call on the CCP to confirm Mr. Siwei’s location and well-being, and to allow him access to a lawyer. These actions show how the CCP’s repressive tactics extend beyond the PRC’s own borders. We will not stay silent in the face of continued transnational repression by the CCP and call on them to end such practices immediately.”
