Gallagher on De minimis Imports from China Flooding the U.S. with Counterfeit Goods & Narcotics
Last Friday, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal, Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party issued the below statement after the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) disclosed data to the committee on the sharp increase in de minimis imports entering the United States during FY23 and FY24.
“According to CBP, more than 485 million de minimis shipments have already entered the United States in FY24, on top of the 1.05 billion shipments that entered tax-free under de minimis rules in 2023, itself a shocking 53% increase from 2022. No less than 94% of all import transactions now enter the U.S. through De Minimis rules, accounting for 90% of all illegal narcotics, agricultural goods, and counterfeit seizures by customs.
“Exploitation of the de minimis exemption is accelerating the export of American jobs and giving Chinese companies using Uyghur forced labor a complete pass. We can’t expect American companies to compete with foreign companies that don’t have to pay taxes. Unless Congress takes urgent action, American retail will be forced to shift US operations and jobs to China.”
'BYD Has Designs on Global Dominance'- Chairman Gallagher

WATCH: Last Thursday, Chairman Rep. Mike Gallagher and Ranking Member Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi joined Joe Kernen on CNBC's 'Squawk Box' to discuss the Select Committee's recent trip to Taiwan and China's threat to our electric vehicle supply chain.
Chairman Gallagher: “If we allow heavily subsidized BYD vehicles to flood the American market, it could be the death of major auto manufacturers.”
Gallagher on McKinsey Advising the Chinese Communist Party
Last Monday, Chairman Gallagher released the statement below in response to a report from the Financial Times that a McKinsey led think tank advised the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese military.
“McKinsey advertises itself as a ‘values-driven organization’ that is ‘dedicated to doing the right thing,’ protects human rights, and conducts its business activities ‘in ways that honor ethical values and respect people, communities, and the environment.’ It is impossible to square this self-described mission and set of values with McKinsey’s partnership with the CCP, the greatest enemy of human rights, the environment, and individual privacy in the world today. One is left to conclude that McKinsey’s true mission is to make money, even if that money comes from genocidal communists. Companies like McKinsey that help the CCP in its quest to destroy individual dignity and American global leadership should be prohibited from receiving taxpayer dollars. Furthermore, as I have previously written, the methodology employed in certain McKinsey studies, for which they are richly rewarded, would not withstand basic scrutiny from an entry-level undergraduate course.'
