Gallagher, Krishnamoorthi Applaud Biotech Commission for Call to Restrict Foreign Adversary Biotech Firms Like BGI Group & WuXi AppTec

February 2, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party released the below statement commending the bipartisan National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology for its endorsement of the policy behind the bipartisan, bicameral BIOSECURE Act introduced last week by Chairman Gallagher and Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi.

“We welcome the bipartisan National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology’s endorsement of the policy behind our bipartisan, bicameral BIOSECURE Act. United States taxpayers should not fund foreign adversary biotech companies like BGI Group, its subsidiaries, and WuXi AppTec, all of which are collecting Americans’ genomic data and other sensitive health information to fuel the CCP’s biotech ambitions. We look forward to working with the Commission to protect American genomic data from the Chinese Communist Party.”

Background:

Last week, Chairman Gallagher, Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi and a host of bipartisan lawmakers introduced the BIOSECURE Act to ensure foreign adversary biotech companies of U.S. national security concern do not gain access to U.S. taxpayer dollars.

Once enacted, the legislation would restrict federally funded medical providers from using foreign adversary biotech companies of concern, including BGI Group and its subsidiaries, MGI and Complete Genomics, along with another PLA-affiliated firm, called WuXi Apptec.

Chinese companies like BGI Group and Wuxi AppTec collect the genetic data of Americans to likely use for research with the Chinese military. By allowing these companies to amass and analyze large amounts of U.S. and foreign genomic data, we risk allowing our most sensitive information to be used against us.
