Gallagher, Krishnamoorthi Condemn CCP Sentencing of Prominent Uyghur Academic to Life in Prison

October 3, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party today issued the following statement regarding the CCP’s reported sentencing of prominent Uyghur academic Rahile Dawut to life in prison.

“We strongly condemn the reported life sentence given to Professor Rahile Dawut by the CCP and call for the immediate release of Professor Dawut and the other Uyghur and Muslim intellectuals who have been unjustly detained. The Chinese Communist Party’s continued genocide against the Uyghurs and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups is a violation of international standards protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. The CCP insists the PRC is a “law-based country”, but its repeated invoking of the law as a tool for the repression of Uyghur culture and traditions says otherwise. It must stop, and Professor Dawut and all other illegally imprisoned individuals must be released immediately.”
