WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration's recent announcement on proposed actions to counter the CCP's unfair maritime practices and help revitalize the U.S. shipbuilding industry:

“We welcome the announcement on proposed actions based on the investigations of two successive Administrations into the Chinese Communist Party’s policies to dominate the global shipbuilding and maritime industries. There is mutual agreement between a Republican and Democratic administration that the CCP has for decades used state subsidies and anti-competitive practices to restrict U.S. shipbuilding and maritime commerce. Not long ago, the U.S. was the world’s largest shipbuilder. Today, due to its aggressive non-market policies, the People’s Republic of China controls over 50 percent of the world’s shipbuilding, while the U.S. accounts for just 0.2 percent. For every large ocean-going vessel built in America each year, the PRC builds 359. We are firmly committed to working on a bipartisan basis to hold the CCP accountable for its unfair maritime practices and to revitalize our domestic shipbuilding industry and workforce, restoring America’s identity as the preeminent commercial maritime power for the 21st century.”

Both Republican and Democratic leaders agree on the need to take action to counter China's aggressive and unfair trade practices that have undermined the U.S. maritime industry. The Select Committee will continue its joint efforts aim to address the economic threat posed by the CCP and restore the U.S. to its rightful position in global shipbuilding.
