Moolenaar: China Co-opted Meta's AI Platforms for Military Advances

November 8, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Last week, the Jamestown Foundation released a report detailing how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has repurposed Meta’s “Llama” model—an open-source AI tool originally developed to advance research—into “ChatBIT,” a platform supporting the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) with real-time intelligence and military decision-making. By exploiting the open-access nature of U.S.-built technology, the CCP aims to seize the global high ground in AI, putting U.S. national security at risk.

Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI) issued the following statement upon the report's release:

“This report reveals a stark truth: the Chinese Communist Party is co-opting American AI to fuel its military agenda. By weaponizing our open-access technology, the CCP is using U.S. innovation to tip the global balance of power, undermining our security and the principles of open collaboration. The Jamestown Foundation has exposed this urgent threat, demanding a critical reassessment of how we protect our technological edge from exploitation.”
